WHY VOBEC CHOSE TO DIS-AFFILATE FROM ALS FOR OUR BEACH CLEANUP

WHY VOBEC CHOSE TO DIS-AFFILATE FROM ALS FOR OUR BEACH CLEANUP

LETTER TO EDITOR:  REASONS FOR VOBEC  DIS-AFFILIATION  FROM ALS BEACH CLEANUPDear Editor -

Many Fire Islanders recently received an Invitation (from Sen.Owen Johnson) to participate in ALS's Annual Beach Cleanup, Saturday, Sept. 15th .  This year, the Village of Ocean Beach Environmental Commission (VOBEC)chose to dis-affiliate our cleanup from The American Littoral Society, and instead work directly with The Ocean Conservancy oceanconservancy.org , worldwide coordinating sponsor of the International Coastal Cleanup (ICC).
Here's why:
In "Coastal Reporter -Summer 2006", ALS published remarks regarding issues that strike at the heart of Fire Islander's efforts to save our shoreline.  For example, on page one of their newsletter National Flood Insurance and  Fire Islander's efforts to replenish our beaches are described as "subsidies" where the "many pay to benefit a few".
"Oceanfronters" are described as "distressed" because sea level rise "threatens their real estate investments".  The article suggests accepting "only as a last resort any engineering solution for beach restoration or preservation, and make sure its cost is borne primarily by those closest to the water’s edge".  The price of beach preservation is described as "diminished beach access for all but a privileged few..."  and  "... cost to taxpayers to maintain property built in harm’s way and increased coastal degradation".
As Ocean Beach Cleanup Captain I have long supported ALS's coordination of the NYS ICC.  I was surprised and dismayed at their politically-oriented and socially-divisive comments.  For these reasons, and many more that the reader can discover for himself by visiting littoralsociety.org and clicking on Newsletters, I recommended that Ocean Beach's Cleanup be held on Saturday, September 15th, but without affiliation with ALS.  It is obvious that the Barrier Beach and its Dunes protect not only Fire Island itself, but also the Great South Bay and the South Shore of Long Island. Please join us 11AM at the Cottage Overpass.  Wear gloves, hat and sunscreen.  Prizes & Refreshments for all participants.
